Why CEREC Digital Dentistry?
Fractures are one of the most common reasons why root canals are needed and why teeth are lost.
Crowns are a way to prevent fractures, repair fractured teeth, or a way to prevent fractures from propagating deeper into a tooth. If a fracture reaches the tissue inside the tooth called the pulp a root canal will be needed. If the fracture is allowed to propagate even further the root can crack or split and a root canal will not be able to save the tooth; the tooth then needs to be removed.
Previously tooth colored crowns were made of porcelain fused to metal. They were made with real porcelain. Real porcelain is not strong enough to hold up by itself as a crown so it had to be baked onto a metal structure underneath. Metal does not stick to tooth structure very well with adhesives so the sides of the tooth had to be cut off to hold the crown on mechanically. New ceramics nowadays are 5-6 times stronger than porcelain so they do not need a metal backing. Crowns are now all ceramic with no metal. This allows the ceramic to adhere directly to tooth structure. By adhesively attaching to ceramic to the tooth, mechanical retention is not needed. Enamel on the sides of the teeth that would normally have to be cut off for mechanical retention is spared. In other words more of your tooth is saved.
Because CEREC computer made crowns can be made on the same day, no temporary crown is needed. We can fully take advantage of adhesively held ceramic crowns in saving tooth structure. Without a same day CEREC crown, a crown could still be with of the new ceramic but a mechanically held temporary would still be needed for the 2-3 weeks while the permanent crown is made in the laboratory. This would require more enamel removal just to hold the temporary crown.
After a thorough examination with x-rays, we can determine if the procedure will work for you. We will go through all of your options with you so that you can be sure you’re choosing the one that will work best for you.
Making a CEREC crown starts with scanning your teeth into the computer. The tooth that needs a crown is then prepared and then scanned again. You can leave the office and go home if you choose while the crown is computer designed and manufactured. You return for a second visit on the same day and we fit and cement the crown.
